Yuichi
OnoueÕs Kaisatsuko
The
Kaisatsuko is Yuichi Onoue's original handmade instrument. It was made in 2003.
It is an electric two strings upright fiddle. But it is not performed with a
bow. The rotating wheel (which is rotated by my handling) rubs strings and
makes sound like a Hurdy-Gurdy.
The translation of the word is
as follows:
Kai =
Rotation Satsu = Rub Ko = Oriental fiddle
In
my opinion it sounds much better than the Hurdy-Gurdy, because the annoying bag
pipe connection is absent on this instrument and the fretless neck allows
glissando playing instead of the locked tones on the Hurdy-Gurdy. Check his
cover of the BeatlesÕ Within you, without you below.

Another
instrument Onoue plays is a scaloped guitar. He playsit in an awesome
Vietnamese tradtional way.

He
has also made several electronic instruments, which can be viewed on his
website.
His
instruments are not for sale.
Besides
building and playing experimental instrument he has also developed a microtonal
24-TET scale (24 notes instead of the usual Western 12-TET).
