Vincent Moon is an independant film maker from Paris/New
York, mainly known for his music videos for a large serie of indie rock
artists, among which The Ex, Liars, Arcade Fire,
Daniel Johnston, dEUS, Animal Collective, but also some main stream artists
like R.E.M. and Tom Jones, which caused wide attention to his works. He started
filming artists in 2007 and produced since then an amazing large serie of music
clips for over 90 artists.
His Tom Jones film was very beautiful in my opinion. It
takes quite something to convince me Jones is a charming musician, in which
Moon succeeded by portaiting him in this particular way as can be viewed in these movies.
His visit to Jad Fair is also
good fun as can be seen in his short movie Paris lost in Texas.
Besides the music clips he also makes longer movies. At SxSW 2009 I saw his wild documentary of ATP NYC 2008, which featured music by Lightning
Bolt, Les Savy Fav and many others. He also made one of the ATP 2007 in
England, but thatÕs more some kind of a try-out. The NYC one is more
interesting to watch.
Moon and I are currently working out a project with his
friend Gaspar Claus for a festival in Perpignan 28th-30th
of August 2009. The Moi Non Plus as
well as Jessie Stein will
also be part of this event.
IÕm quite a big fan of Moon. As soon as IÕve some more time,
I will expand this page and add information about some good works heÕs managed.
What mostly strikes me, is his blending of lo-fi easthetics, Alan Lomax like
field recordings and his way of portraiting the artists in a particular
personal style. His movies are an enhancement to the music of the involved
artists. ItÕs filmed in a Dogma Õ95 style, but done by someone, who has an
excellent feeling for composition, improvisation and good storytelling with
images and adding fun to the setting with his loose approach.
