The Lapse was one of the bands I listened to a lot during
the days I was running my comic book store (1998-2001). The Lapse was formed in 1997 by Chris Leo and Toko Yasuda. Before that, Chris and Toko played in the much beloved Van Pelt, who released
two albums, numerous singles and some EPs. Before that, Toko played briefly in
Blonde Redhead and Chris played in the early 90's post-hardcore group Native
Nod. Eight
drummers came and left The Lapse during their existence.
The Lapse is pretty similar to The Van Pelt, but
with better songs and more creative freedom. The debut is more up-tempo noisy, their second album also
features some more electronic focused songs mainly with Yasuda on vocals at
these tracks. LeoÕs voice can be intruiging as well as annoying. IÕm
particularly fond his half-spoken style of singing, but perhaps not joyable for
everybody, I guess.
The Lapse disbanded in 2000. Yasuda joined Enon, Chris Leo started a band called Vague
Angels and released a book+cd.
For people who like Thurston MooreÕs Psychic Hearts, the
early Blonde Redhead or Enon this band is a recommendation to check out.
