Blood Red Shoes

For Laura-Mary of Blood Red Shoes I built the first Springtime guitar. I was searching for a long time to find a suitable band for my stereo bass guitar + guitar idea, until I received a message from the venue Ekko in Utrecht who mentioned them as a two piece band making music in the tradition of Nirvana, Pixies Sonic Youth, and the 90s Riot Grrrl bands like Le Tigre and Sleater-Kinney. IÕm always a bit reserved when Nirvana is mentioned as a reference. Numerous lame bands of the ninties were endless referred to as being grunge, but this is actually the first band after Nirvana and the Riot Grrrl bands, which uses the grunge sound in a good way instead of the pathetic mainstream clones like The Offspring and Bush.

They are currently (may 2009) working on their 2nd album as can be viewed in their YouTube Diary clip:

The Springtime is shown right in the beginning of the clip. Steven told me it was a challence to work with it, because it was louder than he could drum. He really had to work to compete with it. The Springtime is used on the current recordings for the second album. They donÕt play live with it yet, but the album is said to be released in spring 2010.

Allmusic Biography

Brighton, England's Blood Red Shoes features Laura-Mary Carter (vocals/guitar) and Steven Ansell (drums/vocals), two enthusiastic punk-inspired brawlers who channel the clamor of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Duke Spirit, and Huggy Bear. Ansell, who performed with Cat on Form, and Carter, a former member of Lady Muck, came together in late 2004 upon the demise of their previous bands. With one song in tow, the angsty duo landed a gig and Blood Red Shoes was born; the name is reminiscent of Ginger Rogers, who allegedly had to redo a tap dance scene so many times that her white dancing shoes ended up covered in blood. By mid-2005, Blood Red Shoes readied the release of their debut 7" EP for the London indie imprint Jonson Family. With BBC Radio 1 and XFM championing songs such as the shouty "Victory for the Magpie" and "Don't Always Say Yes", the EP sold out in just weeks. Follow-up singles "ADHD" and "Stitch Me Back" arrived on Try Harder in early 2006. In April 2008 they released their debut album Box of Secrets.
