Biography

Yuri Landman (Zwolle, Februari 1st, 1973) is a Dutch autodidact artist mainly known as an experimental music instrument inventor, but also active as a musician, comic book artist, and as an acoustical scientist and musicologist.

After being trained as a chemical analist, Landman began his carrier as a comic book artist and published two autobiographical graphic novels. Between 1998 and 2004 he played in the bands Zoppo and Avec-A. He owned a comic book store in the period 1998 - 2001 and here he learned woodworking for the sake of the store. In 2000 he was skilled enough to try out building his first electric musical instrument. In the period 2000 - 2006 he made nine proto instruments.

His instruments aren't regular electric guitars, but look more like multi string oxbows. Systems mainly focused on altering sound in a physical natural way with resonance and overtoning spectra. After an orientation period for his own interest he took a second step and began building instruments for bands he appreciated, mainly active in the experimental rock, noise rock and avant garde indie rock genres. He created exclusive proto instruments for Liars, Sonic Youth, Blood Red Shoes, Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh), Mauro Pawlowski (dEUS), Enon, The Luyas, Jad Fair (Half Japanese), The Moi Non Plus, Liam Finn, Finn Andrews (The Veils), The Dodos and a list of other soon to be confirmed artists.

The instrument construction led to an interest for science related to physics (acoustics and cymatics) and musicology. Landman introduced the term 3rd Bridge and focused on microtonality, consonance and the historic development of musical scales related to the theory behind the 3rd bridge playing technique. About an occuring consonance/dissonance paradox present in noise rock he published in 2008 the article Ô3rd Bridge, the Helix of ConsonanceÕ.

In 2009 he developed the Tafelberg Drum Guitar and the Landmine, a 25 meter long string instrument, which premiered at a Perpignan Festival curated by Gaspar Claus and Vincent Moon.

In 2009 he started with his workshop building your own Home Swinger at several European festivals. In addition to this workshop he began performing again as a musician with large groups of participants playing a noise rock composition in the tradition of Rhys ChathamÕs G3 and BrancaÕs The Ascension.
