IÕve youÕre coming to Amsterdam, here a few tips to check
out. Later I will add more, but this is at least enough to spend on for a few
hours when youÕre in town.
Distortion Records in Amsterdam West is probably the best
place to go to if you like to buy music. I used to buy my cds at Get, but that
oneÕs closed. Distortion mainly sells vinyl, but has some cds too. The shop is
a bit unorganised, but Armand can for sure help you.
DonÕt go the Amsterdam. There is one though, focused on Antique
musical instruments. I forgot the name of the store.
You can check Ōt Spui, a town square in the centre of the
city. On Friday thereÕs a 2nd hand book market. On the corner youÕll
find Atheneum Books, a big store with most relevant new books youÕre searching
for. There are many 2nd hand book stores in the Damstraat as well.
For comic cooks visit Lambiek in the Kerkstraat, the first comic book store in the world. Not very interesting, but itÕs regarded one of the most outspoken shops devoted to underground comics as well as European avant garde comic books and graphic novel literature. Many books in English are available as well as original artwork, silk screen prints, Sunday pages, posters, etc.. Every two months a new bi-monthly exhibition takes place. All prominent artists from the past 50 years have once or more had large exhibitions at the gallery of this unique store. Very nearby the Leidse Plein.
Famous venues are Paradiso and Melkweg, depending if the
bands playing there you can have a good time. De Nieuwe Anita is a hip indie
rock venue in Amsterdam West to hang around. Other places: OCCII, OT301,
Winston Kingdom, Bitterzoet can be suitable places, but also annoying if the
programm sucks that particular night. Subbacultcha! has a very up to date agenda
to check out.
